HOM, House of Moirai

The wedding industry in Dubai is pretty small. For the most part, it’s made up of really great people that believe in what they do, and that do it great. One of the most inspiring designers I have met in a while is B from House of Moirai.

I asked B a few questions to get to know her better.

How tall are you?

How old are you?

Do you dye your hair?
No, i am a real redhead!

What is a normal day in your life like?
Baby, eat, work, baby, eat, baby, work, eat, sleep! With a few nappy changes in there for good measure.

Tell us 3 words about yourself?
Busy working mummy

What is HOM?
Here at HOM we design and make made to order wedding attire, bridal accessories and jewelry. We can dress your entire wedding party from the Bride, the Groom, to the wedding guests. We specialise in bridesmaids dresses, soft tailored bridal gowns, men’s tailoring, and evening wear. We like our clients to be involved in the whole process from start to finish and everything is made in house at our studio. My colleague Jane is a jewelry designer and creates one off pieces for people. Maybe you need set of cufflinks for your groom or pendants for your bridesmaids? Jane can design and create a piece which is unique to that person.

Where does the name come from?
‘MOIRAI’ /ˈmoˌrye’/’Each person’s destiny is thought of as a thread spun, measured and cut by the three goddesses of fate.’ I’m a BIG believer in destiny and fate taking you down your paths of life so it seemed a perfect name for my company. Although people pronounce it wrong all the time!

How did it all begin?
I have been a Bridesmaid on more than one occasion, eight times to be precise, and I know how hard it can be to find a dress that pleases everyone. That was my starting point, I wanted to help Brides and their maids find the right look for their day and have fun in the process.

As a fashion designer, for the last 10 years, I’ve had a lot of experience dealing with fabrics and knowing what works for people. But my passion for having my own business started at a very young age as I sat and watched my mum design and stitch the most beautiful outfits for people. She had her own dressmaking business and was incredibly talented. I spent half my childhood in fabric shops and in her studio, completely mesmerized by all the beautiful colours, patterns and designs. It was inevitable really that I would eventually follow in her footsteps.

Moirai evolved naturally really, I started with a few orders for Bridesmaids dresses, then I was introduced to wedding guests that wanted something special for their day, and now we dress the entire wedding party!

We can take a Bride’s vision and create a look that meets all of their needs. We don’t like to compromise on style or quality so we work very close with all our Brides to ensure that the end result is exactly what they want and more.

What are your favourite things to do on a weekend?
I usually work Saturdays, as that is when I do most of my fittings and consultations, so Fridays are quite sacred. If I’m lucky I may get a lie in, but mostly I cherish the rare family time we have together.

How do you find your creative inspiration at work?
From everywhere! But my guilty secret is that I’m obsessed with Pinterest! I know I’m not alone!

How long does it take to design a dress or a collection of dresses?
I sketch by hand so not too long, I like to sit down with a glass of wine and get my sketchbook out of an evening!

What is your ethnicity?
White British

The next wedding season 2014/2015 is coming up soon, how excited are you?
It’s a busy time! But it means I get to see the finished dresses walking down the aisles!

What inspires you and what keeps you motivated?
People inspire me from all walks of life. My future motivates me, building a future for myself and my family that’s secure and happy, and knowing that I’m fulfilling my dream motivates me every day. I feel so lucky i’m getting to do what I love.

How would you describe your style?
All over the place!! Being a working mum means i tend to grab the thing that is the cleanest! But i’d say I prefer a laid back, boho vintage style to anything else. Not sure I quite manage to work that though! 😀

What’s next in your life?
Growing the business and enjoying time with my little boy!
